Hey guys

I am looking at putting an EPIRB into the boat...Anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at the one that we can get the group price on, but I would rather one for the boat, not a personal one. Oddly enough, that store is like 5 minutes from me when I am in RI.

Thanks in advance

Pat,

If you are getting one for the boat, I would think that a Cat 1 or Cat 2 Globalfix would be a good choice. The GlobalFix units have an integral GPS, so you don't need to have a wired connection to your onboard GPS.

The Cat 1 EPIRB's are auto-deploy and the Cat 2's are manual deploy.
Personally, I don't want to have to wait until the boat is 15' under for the Cat 1 to deploy, but that's me...

The unit that I bought for myself is the ACR AquaFix 406 which is a Personal EPIRB (PLB) and includes the internal GPS.

The difference between the two units is size and activation duration. The Globalfix will operate for 72 hours, is mounted to, and is registered to the boat.
The AquaFix is rated for 24 hours of activated duration, and is registered to the person.

Hope this helps.
