gaffers- nice ones - lots of 'em.
fished 3 days last week all as mate on charter boats
day 1
billfishing charter
fished the deep looking for a blue marlin.
lots of current & not many bites.
didn't raise a billfish. just not our day.
we did get enough mahi so we all had plenty of fish tacos.
day 2.
meat fishing charter
fished closer in and worked the change most of the day.
found one spot on an edge and scratched out a decent catch.
Ended up with about 20 large hoisters & medium gaffers.
day 3
meat fishing charter
fished yesterday & we worked 25-50 fathoms in pretty blue water.
went through 4 dozen ballyhoo and had a great day catching lots of big gaffers.
had 4 or 5 over 25lbs. Also caught a wahoo and 3 blackfin.
Party was happy and my tip reflected their joy.
Anyway, the bite is on NOW!
Do not delay, this spring gaffer bit doesn't last long.
It will be over in a few weeks.
If you can't get your own boat down here, book a charter.
Right now, Hatteras is better than Oregon Inlet. The fish are close.
