Lately all my fishing has been as mate on charter boats.
I'm fishing a lot, just not on my boat.
Bad Betty's been tied up in the slip. Lonely Girl.
The day before yesterday my phone rang at 7 am. I was sleeping just fine.
A buddy of mine called & told me to get my butt out of bed & go fishing. He said the ocean was slick calm.
I checked in with SWMBO, got clearance & arrived at my slip with a barrel of ice and a 12 pack of ballyhoo.
It was 9am. Decided all I wanted was a fish taco, or a sailfish. A short day hit or miss was my plan.
It was slick calm & Betty made 22knots to a spot I wanted to fish about 20-25 fathoms.
I started putting out the baits at the crack of 10:30 am. Civilized fishing if you will.
Before I had them all out I had my first fish on. A nice 26 pound wahoo.
Boxed him & kept working a nice slick nearby. Popped another 40# wahoo, NC citation size.
Headed out toward the deep to look for a billfish & got another 26 pound wahoo.
Decided enough was enough for 3 hours fishing & pulled & in & ran 25 knots all the way home.
Tied up at the dock at 2:30pm with 3 nice fish.
I know not every day can be like this but every so often a man gets lucky.
It's hard not to smile.
Offshore the fishing's been good lately. Wahoo bite has been pretty strong.
We had a great gaffer season.
Bailers are hit and miss but that seems to be picking up.
Billfish come and go.
Had a few days with some decent sailfish action last week.
I have another charter trip on wednesday.
Maybe I'll take Betty out to look for that sail later this week.
