Installing Garmin chartplotter, sonar, XM, etc and per the instructions in creating the 2000 Network, after connecting the "T-connectors" that everything "drops" into, it says to wire the NMEA power cable from the T-connectors "to a 12Vdc power source through a switch. Connect to the ignition switch for the boat if possible."

I understand that the NMEA 2000 backbone needs it's own power source but I don't understand why the igition switch and not a constant power source. When I'm stopped & bottom fishing, I still want my "Network" to work. Any explainations from someone????

Thanks a lot.

Just power it to the bus panel on the back of the helm. Maybe they say it to cover their butts so that way someone cant run their battery down and get pissed off at Garmin.
