Unscrew that battery switch, and you will see if that cut out was edge sealed, or whether you might have water migrating downward from there.

The cheaper the stainless, the more magnetic the screws will be. Remove a couple of rusty screws, and see how close you can move a good magnet to them before they jump to it. Good stainless may stick, but it won't jump. Video would be good.
