Looking for some info on anyone running a similar setup.
I bought the boat this season, and expected much better performance.
The engine seems to work very hard to push the boat, and I have to run the engine @ 46-4700 RPM for a 18-21 knt cruise, depending on conditions and load. I don't have a flow meter, but I'm burning a ton of fuel at this RPM.
I expected this to be a fairly efficient (for a 2 stroke) set up at an easy cruise - say 41-4200 RPM, but that only pushes the boat at @15 knts in calm seas. The boat has the original factory tabs.

Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

I'm not exactly sure, but it is a Mercury Mirage 3 blade prop.
I can check the numbers this week.

I have a 2520 MVSC (14 degree deadrise) with a 1997 OX66 swinging a Merc Mirage 17p prop.
Cruise for me is 3800 to 4200 rpm making between 19 and 23 kts depending on sea conditions.
At 4000 rpm I'm burning about 12 to 13 gph.
At WOT I have seen 34 kts turning 5100 rpm on flat water with 4 aboard, 3/4 fuel, and a lot of gear aboard... this was on an early July bottom.

I replaced the OEM 12x12 tabs years ago for a set of 24x9 Bennetts, and performance (and economy) benefitted greatly.

From what I'm reading, I can't complain w/ my setup. 1991 2520 pilot w/twin yamahas 200hp 1991 vintage. I run at 3500 rpms at 25 knots easily and burn around 12-15 gallon per hr. I throttle back to 3400 rpms and it seems that the engine are working a little harder to maintain plane. The boat is has benitt trim tabs which certainly has its benifits.

we had a 250 ox66 1998 on our 2530 it burned around 1.2 to 1 consistently around 4200 4500 rpm..recently swaped over to the new 300 offshore seriesfour stroke the lighter version. Our first ride with 2 foot seas 28mph was getting 2.4 and on flater water in the bay it changed to 2.7....good luck trying to find the best numbers as the cost of fuel is not helping much...

Monomoy64,
What year boat and hull do you have? My original set up was the OX66 250 HP mounted to my 1999 2530 Deep Vee extended cabin (21 degree hull and 154 gallon fuel tank). I ran a Yamaha 17T prop. If you have this hull, the performance you described is about right. You need to get up into the upper 4K range to push the boat in normal conditions. I normally ran at about 4,600to 5,100 rpms. My top speed was 39 mph at 6,000 rpms with the engine trimmed way up with that set up (in calm conditions and light load). On the downside, although a really reliable engine, I only averaged slightly over 1 mpg throughout the engine's performance range. Although the 250 OX66 pushed the boat adequately, it is a heavy hull. The engine also burned a lot of oil; probably close to 40:1 ratio. I sold the engine about 4 years ago when I repowered. Before I sold it I had the engine gone over. Compression was perfect and it ran great. In my opinion, that is one of the best engines ever! Hope this helps.

2320 extended cabin, 1999 Ox66 250 with a 15p 3-blade PowerTech OFS prop.

Cruise is 4600 to 4800 which yields around 21 to 23 mph and 14 gph fuel burn. Generally I'd say she burns about 1.7 to 2.1 mpg (statute) in good conditions for longer trips.

Yes, I know its under-propped. The boat (not the engine necessarily) seems happiest when running around 5000 rpms and 24 to 26 mph. Ironically she gets pretty good fuel mileage at that speed (around 1.9 to 2.2 mpg) in calm seas

Brent that seems very high to me, i run my 2320 225 hp ox66 and 4100-4300 and at 4100 im pushing 24-26 mph. I know you have extended cab but still seems a little high for me, at 5100 im basically WOT and im around 36 mph

Yea, I agree. I want to try a 17p prop, but I've been too busy with other projects, to be honest. I even found a guy selling reconditioned Mirage stainless props for like $200 (shipped) and guaranteed.

This is mine...

I have a 2520 DV and a 250hp Ox66 on a bracket.

I seem to get very good #'s compared to what I'm reading. With half a load of fuel, I can easily get 25mph at 4500RPM's. Often it's better. The fuel burn is about 14gph.

I try to stay under 4500RPM's a little, such as 4300 if I can as the economy increases and the speed decreases only a little. I never get as bad as 1MPG, evern fully loaded in heavy seas. The worst I've seen is 1.2MPG and I often get 1.8MPG.

A few years ago I did a long offshore trip where I averaged 1.7MPG, fully loaded, calm seas. I'm running a Mercury Mirage 17P 3 bladed prop. and get 5300RPM's WOT trimmed out.

Thanks everyone for the input! This site is awesome.

It seems like performance varies widely across many of you with a similar set up. When I bought the boat this spring the engine was compression tested and run up, service records reviewed, etc. Everything checked out, with excellent compression. The engine has run great, quick start up, idles right down and maintains a low idle speed.
I'll check the prop I'm running. I'm temped to put on a flow meter, but it might just depress me.
Do folks feel the bigger trim tabs make a big difference in efficiency (low speed plane)?
My hull is not a DV, so I just assumed that it would be fairly efficient. I suspect I'm getting @ 1 mpg at the moment.
Still puzzled...
