I have a 23' and have far less than 23' of chain. The chain's role is to lay down the anchor so that the flukes can initially take a good bite into the bottom, and then to minimize the lifting of the anchor shank from wave action. Without measuring, I'm guessing that mine is 8' or so of 3/8" stainless. Weight is the key here, however -8' of small diameter (e.g. 1/4") chain is no where near as effective as, say 3/8" chain loop wire diameter.
