Haha ... actually "rope" is nothing but a bulk coil of "cordage" ...

-Cut a "rope" into smaller usable sections and you get a "line"

-Attach a "line" to the bow of a dinghy and you get a "painter"

-Cut some "cordage" and attach to an anchor and you get "rode"

-Attach a short section of "line" to a cable or chain for some specific use and it becomes a "pendant", e.g., mooring pendant

... and that leaves out the sailing specific uses for line, like "sheet"
 
My anchor locker is stuffed to capacity. I have 600' of 1/2" nylon anchor rode and 12' of 3/8" chain and a 14lb anchor.

Gotta admit the boat rides nice with all that weight up there too.
