Great commotion at Lynnhaven Inlet today involving police, CG, news choppers. We learned that an 18 ft boat carrying 6 passengers had capsized outside of the inlet. Two dead, two in ICU, two released. The boat was an 18 ft Tracker and the folks were visitors from Arizona who had made several annual trips from AZ to Virginia Beach for winter striper season. There were small craft warnings this AM when they departed in a boat that looked to be designed for lake fishing (bowrider with trolling motor on front). They sent a mayday, but were in the water about 30 minutes before local pilot boats arrived on scene followed by CG, police. Pilots pulled folks from water, but too late for two of them. It was stated that they were dressed for cold air, but not 40 degree water.

Striper fever is rampant in Va Beach and I'm grateful for a boat that is built for the task, but we should always be mindful of the risk in winter fishing. Condolences to the families of these enthusiasts.

6 souls in an 18' Tracker on a SCW day at the CBBT...
Not a good combination.

Lets hope the folks in ICU recover, and thank goodness for the pilot boats.
