Boat & Tool Question

A recent thread caused me to think about the two handiest tools for boat owners (excluding a huge checkbook). My vote for the two would be:

1. Dremel tool - cuts metal, drills, gets in small places, cleans up corrosion and rust, opens gelcoat cracks for repair, etc.
2. Electrical Multi-meter - has cut down huge amounts of time on troubleshooting electrical problems in lights, trailer lights, various motor issues, etc. I have a cheap one that I keep on the boat that even does temperature. Great for telling if the engine is really hot or there is an issue with the sensor.

That's my vote for 2, what's yours? I'm looking for the opportunity to buy a new tool.

A quality buffer.

I have a Makita 9227c which uses 7" wool pads.
It is great for the hull and larger surfaces, but it can be a challenge to use in more confining areas.
It can be done (and I have done it), but you need to be careful. :wink:

I also have a pair of random orbitals, a 6" and a 3" that I got from Griots Garage.
I don't use these on the boat, but they could be. I use them for polishing my collector car (and the Jeep).

Of course, once you have the tools, you need all the products and pads to go with them.

That's my vote, but you shouldn't use them without a big ol'tub of 'Triple Guard' blue-colored, waterproof synthetic grease. That product, albeit not a tool, probably gets used the MOST on my boat!

Ok Brent WhT is Teflon paste Teflon Gel used for? That's a new one for me.

Tef-Gel, https://tefgel.com.au, is a PTFE-based corrosion inhibitor/anti-seize lube. You could put it on a SS fastener and screw it into aluminum and the SS would not cause the aluminum to corrode, as per a typical galvanic corrosion reaction.

My boat is kept on a trailer in the back yard with shore power. This is my favorite tool:

I absolutely hate battery tools, but this one comes with two batteries. Grab the tool and a fresh battery from the charger and you're always good to go.


My second favorite tool is a small chest freezer on the aft deck.
Five gallons of water in a camping jug with 24oz of dissolved salt will 'brick' in about 2 days. This brine brick will keep my beer under 30° for a week without power while we're out on the water.
