Woody Wax and a bronze pad. Don't bear down on it... use it lightly and the discoloration will come off.

Wash with "Barkeeper's Friend" then wax as Kevin indicated. BKF has a mild "oxycillic" (sp?) acid that chemically removes the iron oxides on the surface of metals. It is mild enough that I scrub the decks and hardware with it while in my bare feet or in sandles, with no irritation. But it works great and is cheap (a whopping $1.25 a can at Wal Mart). I go through about 2 cans a boating season. :D :D :D
