Last time out I met up with a rock going 3 knots per hour. :( I thought I got by without hitting the outboard but upon further inspection the skeg is slightly chipped/scraped. It does not appear to be bent and the motor runs fine without any significant vibrations.

Can it be sanded/ground smooth and repainted? :?:

Block sand it until you are happy with it. Prime with 2 light/med coats of zinc chromate. Base coat with 2 light/med coats with the matching LU color. Follow instructions on dry/recoat times. The more coats of base you put on, the darker it will get. You can clear coat it if you desire, but you are just going to hit something again in the near future so you might want to keep it simple and stop with the paint. The zinc chromate is the trick for holding the base coat intact.

In reality, most people don't bother with trying to keep the skeg painted.
