Hello,
I am brand new to our 2007 Parker 2320sl 225 Yamaha 4 stroke on a transom bracket, and on top of that, being an I/O guy for years now, I am brand new to Outboards also.

We are getting 29mph @5100rpms at wide open. It seems as though we should be getting a bit better top end speed, I think? We were testing on calm water, 1/2 tank of fuel, 4 adults and minimal gear. The hull is bottom painted. The prop is a 19T. Motor is mounted on the top holes of bracket.(furthest down it can be)
We were not using a lot of tabs, but we also did not trim up the motor much not being used to having to do that. Even without trimming up, does that sound normal?

Thank you for any help, we are new with this boat and need advice!

Jake

2-stroke 225's top out at 5500 rpm, but I believe the 4-strokes go to 6000.
Check the motor and make sure it isn't mounted too low (most are from the factory).
Once you raise the motor, start looking at props.
A 19p sounds too big to me. I'm running a 17p on my 2520 and getting 5100 out of my 225, which is still a little low.

1st thing I'm thinking is motor height.

Need concise pix's to determine how the motor is sitting in relation to the boat.....IE: How High or Low is it mounted?

I can tell you that there's no way any 225hp made should wear a 19" pitch prop ...

Thank you all for the replies. I will take pictures and post as soon as possible.

15 1/2 by 17 is a good try for a prop. adjustment. Try changing props first as the easier of the 2 task at hand and may just solve the issue.

I am lighter than your specs but at 5100rpm ( yama250, 15 1/2 x 17 SS prop) the speed is in 40 mph range. At 4000 to 4100rpm she cruise nicely at 30 mph.

Hi Guys,

Here are some pictures of our set up...

Unfortunately, static pictures of the boat out of the water and on a trailer tells you absolutely NOTHING ...

You must check it per the 'stickey' on the same forum for "How to check your OB motor height ... " and it must be done in the water whilst running up on plane. Then check the height of the vent plate to the surface of the water.

Jake... You are way too deep.
Here is my motor after it was raised.
I should have gone up to the last hole. I will do that before launching next spring.
The performance increase was quite noticeable.

I have a 2011 2320sl 225 4 stroke with a 17t prop my motor is mounted 2nd hole like Mega's is. Wot is 6000 mine turns about 5800 at 40mph. I run 3800-4300rpm at 25-29mph. My 2320 came from the factory set this way, I am going to add wider tabs this off season. I also am adding autopilot, I trim the motor to the 1/2 way mark on my rpm/trim gauge. I am satisfied with the way it runs.

Wow, that is opposite of how ours is mounted!

I did look at the plate while on plane (at WOT) and could not see it. In fact it there was inches of water over it, but then again like I stated before I don't think we were trimming correct. (Will try again this weekend.)

So 2 things that look like they need to be addressed-

New prop

Mount motor higher

We already called the prop gods, so between that and other suggestions I have seen on here we should be in a good direction for choosing a new prop.

How about changing motor height? Has anyone here done this themselves? Is this a marina procedure only? Is it as straight forward as moving the motor on the 4 mounting bolts or are other components then affected? Don't worry, I won't pull the bolts off and have my buddies "hang on" to the motor. Just wondering how hard it is to do and what to expect to be charged to have it done.

Thank you again for all the help!

Jake

Jake:

Provide your motor has 'slots' at the bottom 2 bolts and you have a trailer, you can try this, but have 2 helpers w/ you, go slow and be careful!

That's the info I was hoping to hear. The new prop is on its way and we will raise the motor this weekend. Thanks!!

Document with photos. :)

Good News! We completed and tested the recommended changes and WHAT a difference!

We are now getting 6100rpm and 38-39mph WITH the boat loaded with gear.

We moved the motor up to the 3rd mounting hole (same as Megabytes) and put on a 17.5" prop suggested by prop gods.

Moving the motor with the trailer was a snap. The hardest part was our trailer jack was on its way out and didn't want to move much. My brother used his convincing skills to make it finish one last job. Its now replaced with a brand new, heavy duty one. Thank you for the idea Dale H.

Thank you to everyone who helped us set up our boat correct. It is like we just got ANOTHER boat!
