Octane for 250 yamaha

So does my 2006 Yamaha 250 hp 4 stroke require 89 octane, or is 87 acceptable. Want to run the right fuel, yet conserve on the dollars where I can. Is is just a performance issue when running 87 octane or is it not a choice.

I am sure there is a long and short answer to this question.

Mine is the latter: "89" per the manual.

I had a F250 installed on my boat today. The manual says premium gas (minimum octane 89)
