I wonder why he did not have his radar on????

I don't understand that either. With radar, even if you were lost, or GPS was not working, it would show that land was ahead.

I run under radar all the time. If you use it during daylight it doesn't take long to figure out how to relate the blips to real terrain objects, bouys, and fyke nets.
 
I'm guessing that anyone running that fast in those conditions was either not proficient in the use of his radar or paying a bit of attention to the info displayed. It's also likely that beer cans were interfering with signals!

That's more speed than I'd run at night, especially in unfamiliar waters.

Just go fast, glad he did not injure or kill someone else, i feel bad for passangers but driver of boat is totally to blame it is called slow down in unfamilar waters and don't blame gps.
 
Picture is "poster boy" for the difference in a WaterMan and an IT boat owner.
