I have a 1991 Parker 25 - walkaround... currently has the original 250 hp 2stroke. Looking for something used. I've been told to stay away from the hpdi motors and I know the 1st generation 2 stroke yamahas have issues.... am I correct? do others agree?

So...I've been looking for a used ox66 in good condition. Any other suggestions? I see a good amount of 4stroke 225hp motors on the used market. Is 225hp enough power. I called Parker and they said it should be enough/ not much different then my old 2stroke 250. Looking for input. Thanks in advance....

That looks like a great deal.... unfortunately I need a 30" shaft... thanks for posting.

I just called on the Yamaha in LI.... sounds like a good deal but...it's only a 25" shaft...keep them coming!

I have a 2003 200 hp HPDI on a Sea Pro 23 DVCC. over 1000 hrs

I have had some issues with it over the years, but generally I have received good service from it.

The injector driver failed and I had to replace it with a used one. I recently had to reseal the lower unit, which is normal. I had to replace the oil pump recently.

I have asked several Yamaha master mechanics about this engine over the years, they all say the same thing, the engine is fine if properly maintained. The rumors about them blowing up are mostly related to improper installation and bleeding of the oil pump when its time to replace them, the engine then overheats and fails. The rectifier/regulator is water cooled so its good to flush the engine often for this and many reasons. Ring guard is expensive as heck, but I use it religiously.

I would not intentionally buy another one of these engines or any 2 stroke, of course I would now buy a 4 stroke. But I am not overly concerned about the one I have failing for any reason. It has good fuel mileage. I am not afraid to keep spending some money keeping it running.

Most Yamaha dealers, if you know them well, will give you an honest answer, ask around.

My new to me Parker has a 4 stroke and I can't wait to run it.

Do you have approximate hours on those repairs ?
I have a 2003 HPDI 200 also
I have 536 hours on her and no problems at all except regular maintenance.
Had a VST clog but that's it so far I like the motor little louder then the 4 strokes but hey

When the oil pump failed recently I had just over 1000 hrs, I had an alarm indication, so since the alarm worked I did not damage the engine.

The injector driver failed just after having the new oil pump installed, so it is very possible that the mechanic did something terribly wrong, BUT when I took the engine to a master mechanic to diagnose the injector driver failure he felt as though that the injector just happen to fail and most likely wasn't related to the oil pump repair. The symptoms of the injector driver failure are that the engine runs rough and shifts rough and will only reach 2000 rpm. A new injector driver is well over $1000 a used one is $300-$500.

My lower unit fluid had a very slight amount of milkiness to it last year, I changed the fluid and checked it again after about 10 hrs, the milky look returned and I know I had new plug O-rings and they were tight. a simple pressure test is performed and they determine which seal is leaking and replace the seals. I believe the suspects are the shift shaft or the drive shaft, good time to do the water pump impeller.

I have had several mechanics over the years tell me that the ring guard fuel additive is very important. I use it nearly all the time.

NEVER let anyone but a certified Yamaha Master mechanic touch your engine, even for what may seem like a simple repair,
Shop rates are usually about the same all over $90-100, so only use a shop that spends the money to hire master mechanics or sends them to Yamaha school. Even if you have to tow the boat 50 miles, find the right mechanic.

There is a process to clean out corrosion in the outboard motor cooling system, you may want to ask around about it. They recirculate rydlyme through the engine cooling system for several hours. I had a low speed overheating problem on my HPDI a few years back and the process was used on my engine and it worked well. I would check with a Yamaha shop and make sure its okay to do it or how to do it properly. I plan to do it to my Volvo 200 41 B in the spring. http://www.rydlymemarine.com/.

Here are the Rydlyme instructions for outboards http://www.rydlymemarine.com/assets/1/7 ... ctions.pdf

I have used salt away on my Volvo but it doesn't really seem to do much for heavier deposits, it may remove salt somewhat, but not much scale.

If you used salt away on your outboard on a regular basis it would probably be a good thing, but its expensive.

I had an issue with my VST a few years back as well but I do not remember what it was.

If your ever in Mattapoisett look me up. May-Nov.

Thanks for the info!!
I do use salt-away not every time however I religiously flush the motor after each run.
I just sent my injectors out to be cleaned for General purpose had boat since 2003
Numbers where
Cylinders 1-6
before 69 77 74 75 75 77
After 81 81 81 81 81 81
Should see some performance change
I run ring free and Stabil360 all year long every fill up
I have a nephew who is a Master marine mechanic who works on her he is well known and good
I am fortunate to have him all he wants is a steak sub to eat while he works on her and I stick a few bucks in his ash tray of his truck when he is working on it.
The Motor has been built proof so far ....knock on wood

I think you would be very disappointed if you went from a 250 2-stroke to the Yami 225 4-stroke........

IMO - my 2003 2520 xl was a dog with the Yami 225. I repowered last year with an E-Tec 300 after numerous problems related to the exhaust tube corrosion, and a clog-prone fuel system.

Thanks for all the replies... I'm going to call on that 4 stroke in LI... I found a set of twins in NJ that are in good condition and owned by a friend of a friend. I may buy both and sell one but...that's more than I want to do.

I purchased the 2006 250 hp 4 stroke Camron found. I made the 3 hour drive out yesterday and we did a compression test, pulled the lower unit and checked for corrosion, and ran it on a hose. We also hooked it up to the computer and verified hours 605. 290 were under 2000 rpms. Looking forward to getting her rigged. For now she's sitting on an outboard pallet in my utility trailer. She made the long bumpy ride through 3 boroughs of NYC.
