trim indicator malfunction

My trim Indicator on my Yamaha controls (150 4-stroke) does not function properly. The bar stays near the top of the display and oscillates a bit. It continues to do this no matter what trim I place the engine. Any suggestions as to the cause. Thank you.

Lift up motor and trim sender is on the starboard side on my OB by the pivot point
It might need to be cleaned first and lubed or defective
Clean first then check operation
I replaced mine for $90 b/c the spring broke
