The latest news is that Gov. Easley has stated that he will veto House Bill 2167, the bill that is now our chance to get towing 24/7 for boats up to 120" wide. Please contact his office by mail, email, FAX, or phone as soon as possible and ask him SUPPORT AND DO NOT VETO HOUSE BILL 2167.

PLEASE DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!

Here is a link to a letter that you can send automatically:
NC Towing Issues Letter
(This is a new letter composed Friday afternoon 7/11/08; it is different from all the others previously accessed by this same link. Even if you sent the others, send this one too!)

Here is a post from THT, discussing the issues, talking points, and contact info for Gov Easley. I believe it was posted by one of the professional lobbyists working on our behalf - thanks to Boat Girl and other NC boat manufacturers!

Hi, All Supporters of Rep. Arthur Williams’ House Bill #2167 “Towing of Recreational Boats/Exemption”: Below is are the instructions and suggested talking/email points for people to use when they email or call or fax the Governor’s office. Please note this is an instruction sheet. The talking points can be cut and pasted onto an email. Each person should write a brief email or send brief fax or make the call. We need LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE to contact the Governor, each with a brief and polite message. These are to be sent in addition to your excellent, detailed explanations and comparisons of the laws of other states. Because time is short, we need to flood the Governor’s office with BIG NUMBERS of emails and calls and faxes. The more people the better. We need to demonstrate the wide spread and broad support of HB #2167. We do not need detail as much as we need VOLUME of communications.

Suggested points include:
1. Tourism and boating manufacturing are two great industries in eastern NC. We encourage tourists and sportsmen to come to our beautiful coast.

2. The recent activities of the NC Highway Patrol have created a “storm in the blogosphere” in which people are being discouraged from traveling to the coast of North Carolina from inland NC or other locations. One fishing tournament has been cancelled already. Three others are waiting to see if this bill passes. If the bill does not become law, they will be forced to cancel the 3 tournaments. We need your help.

3. Commercial and recreational boaters have excellent safety records in North Carolina. There is no safety crisis. Actually, the wider boats have a better safety record.

4. The NC General Assembly is trying to help us. Please do not stand in their way on this issue.
