What do they do for the 500 hour inspection?

In addition to the "routine" maintenance, Yamaha stipulates "Valve clearance" inspection/adjustment. Who has done this, and what does the procedureaccomplish?
Note: This is done at 500 hours or 2.5 years, whichever is first. Yamaha CS states this invloves removing the head covers, timing belt, and checking the valve spacing. About 3 hours per engine and invloves complicated reinstall of the timing belt.
