Got 5 mile out to my fishing hole and after powering down my warning
alarm starts and the motor shuts down. After motor cooled down
I was able to get back in. The warning starts at the boat ramp. I know that
I took a chance blowing the head but I gambled this time. I had noticed
the tell tale was not working and suspected the water pump and was
confirmed after removal. The motor only had 180hrs. I was told that
was unusual for this motor. but they see it happen when the motor is run
dry without ear muffs or proper water supply to the pump. The owner of
the Yamaha dealership that I bought my parts from told me to never
run the motor with the FLUSHING attachment on the side of the motor.
Only use a good set of muffs or a deep tank. He recommended a muff
attachment made by Mercury that really clamps on to the motor. I bought
it and it WORKED fantastic. The water pump replacement went pretty
good for an novice like me. Now I am back too my favorite hole
catching TROUT :D :D :D

I have 665 hours on each of my F-115s. Have had the pumps changed twice in 6 seasons. Never run from muffs, only run when in the water.

I also have twin Johnson 35s on the little woodie. I run them off of muffs, but one has to be careful to ensure a full flow of water and the muffs are properly connected/sealed. It is easy to overheat a motor on the muffs.

What exactly happened to your pump? Neighbor with 115 had a one-year old impeller split at the hub. Fortunately, he had twins and got home.

The impeller was completely destroyed. Multiple pieces. It got so hot that
there was a glob of plastic that melted from the housing that obstructed the water flow out. The metal housing that the impellar mounts in was
fused to the plastic on the external housing. The Yam tech told me
that it must have been run dry at some point.
