Fished Thursday July 31st and Friday August 1st with Roger Cortez and his buddy Manny off Ensenada. Stayed local on Thursday catching a variety of fish off Punta Banda. Mike at Ensenada bait only had pinhead anchovies so we used fresh frozen squid, plastics and trolled rapalas for our fish:
Roger with a dropper loop whitefish:
Roger with a sand bass:
Manny's whitefish:
Roger's trolled up bonito:
Me with a trolled barracuda:
On Friday we headed offshore looking for the magic kelp paddy. In addition to Roger and Manny we had one of Ensenada’s best charter boat captains, Florentino “Villa”. We made enough bait (mini macks and sardines) in 41 feet of water just off the Ensenada break wall to keep us on fish for most of the day. Our destination was the 238 but we never made it as we started fishing and catching about 6-7 miles short of the 238. Kelps are pretty tough to find but once we found one we would run into another 3 or 4 in the same vicinity. Most kelps were holding yellows and or dorado. Dorado were on the small side with the yellows we caught ranging from 8 to a nice 30 lber I caught.
Me with the first yellow of the day:
Manny with a nice fish:
Another yellow for yours truly:
Glad I was fishing my Saltist with fresh 40 lb Maxima line because this fish had shoulders:
It wasn’t wide open but we managed to pull out some nice fish along with a greedy mako shark who took some bites of a nicer yellow that had me in the kelp for awhile but as soon as I pulled him out Mr. Mako was waiting and did a number on my fish:
So we repaid the favor as Villa free gaffed the 80 lber and we did all we could to stay away from his sharp teeth:
Looking forward to some mako on the barbie today.
It was a beautiful day on the water:
We could have caught more but we all had to be back for Saturday commitments we all had. Looking forward to some Motley Crue and friends tonight at Blockbuster Pavilion!
