I know it's required in Virginia to have one, what other east coast states mandate one?
I'm trying to learn about them.
Cost?
How it's policed?
Where the funds go and who benifits?
ect...

North Carolina started theirs last year and they won't go reciprocal with VA. GRRRRR! No more running down the shoreline to fish the Outer Banks.

VA has a recreational license that covers the entire boat for $38. NC does not, only individuals (unless you buy a charter type license $$$$).

I have bought the Florida license before. Very reasonable for out of state residents. Several options make it easier.

Tommy already addressed FL. The cost varies depending on if you get saltwater only or salt and fresh. About $20 a year plus if you want to target Snook or Tarpon you have to buy a special permit. Tarpon is $50 a year. Anglers fishing from piers may be exempt, over 64 you get concessions I think.

Proceeds go to fisheries management, enforcement, artificial reefs, etc.,

You can try this link if interested.

For NC, you can actually buy your individual recreational license online. Here's the URL: http://www.ncwildlife.org/fs_index_Purchase_License.htm

I'm not looking to buy an out of state lic.
More trying to gather info of states that require one, the cost for one, how that state uses those collected funds, if and how the fishery benifits, ect....
I'm in Mass, and there is word one will be required before 2009.
Mass is pretty corrupt !!!
Most likely the fee will go into the states "General fund"
and little to nothing will go back into the fishery!

Maryland has one, the boat sticker is $50.00 and is good for anyone on the boat.

My fishing license was $75 this year

$50 Saltwater Boat
$20 Freshwater
$5 Trout Stamp

Yes, and that was a pretty hefty increase over last years 'fee'.

What is the money used for?
What they say the money is used for can be found here: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/
What they actually do with it... well, there is some disagreement on that. :(

MD DNR seems to favor what we recreational anglers call "waterman welfare". :x

Virginia recreational fishermen are up in arms this year due to our Governor tapping the salt water license fund to offset general fund budget shortfalls. They told us that this wouldn't happen when they sold us the license program but now the state is edging closer to using these funds as a tax. This license was supposed to be reinvested in programs and special projects that are conservation oriented. They also tell us that marine enforcement must switch part of its funding to the license revenues.

A few years ago the governor switched several million from our Game and Inland Fisheries Dept. License fees into the Parks and Recreation Dept. and then raided Parks and Rec. for the same money to offset losses in the General Fund. Can you say "Laundering?"

You will suffer the same fate in Massachusetts when this license is implemented. It will appear to work properly for a while but when the first serious revenue shortfall occurs the Gov. will tap this fund and the legislature will either approve or turn a blind eye... and there's nothing you can do about it. Your license will become just another use tax.

There was talk here in VA about having a "tow-in" at the capitol in Richmond. Everybody hooks up their boats and tows them downtown, tying up traffic for hours. I don't think we will ever get that organized though.

this has been a big topic on long island-since the fluke season -- i have no problem with it as long as the $ is put to the proper use...
