Hello,
Finally decided to take the plunge and remove my bottom paint on my 1801. The boat had the bottom painted when I purchased it, in my opinion it’s quite ugly and since I only trailer and do not wet slip it’s not entirely needed.
I started with the pressure washer and turbo nozzle and it took of all the thicker parts and left a sort of grey looking finish. Broke out the DA polisher and had some medium grit laying around and decided to give it a quick pass wet. To my amazement the paint came off very quickly. Mind you, the gelcoat is very dull and scuffed still since I have to polish up to 1000 or so from 220-1000 plus cut and polish.
considering trying peel away and letting it sit then hitting it with the power washer, followed up with DA ROS and palm sander. My only fear is sanding though the gel, and will only sand wet as it’s a little less aggressive and the mess is minimal in terms of dust. I’m not too familiar with the Parker gelcoat thickness but it appears it’s quite thick. I’m hoping to restore this hull to almost perfect, and I’m not worried about the work because I plan on it taking a long time. To me it’s worth it, because I will keep this hull forever.
Any suggestions or pointers ?
should I buy stands and take her off the trailer?
anyone know how thick the gelcoat is?
thank you
