Hi all
Trying to get my west marine vhf580 radio to display my GPS coordinates from a lowrance HDS 7 touch without any luck. I entered mmsi number in radio and still nothing.
Anyone have any input as why? I've got the nmea output of the GPS connected to input on radio and ground on both units.
Wondering if any of you had Intel of this setup before I call uniden and lowrance tomorrow.
Thanx in advance
Tony

I t has been years since I made that connection on my boat (Icom 502 to Garmin 2010c).
As I recall, I had to go into the settings on the Garmin and tell it to export (turn on) the NMEA signal.

My guess is that you need to do the same with your Lowrance.

Several questions come to mind....No I haven't done my usual in depth checking.

Is the Lorwance unit turned ON to pass the info? There is usually a menu for this.

Is the Lorwance set to use NMEA 0183? Most Lorwance are NMEA 2000 and most VHF's are 0183.....They will not talk to one another.

This radio supports NMEA0183 version 4.01

Output sentences
Used to select the NMEA 0183 output sentences your unit will use
when communicating with other NMEA 0183 devices. The default
setting will work well with most configurations.

Or......You can return the West Marine radio and get you a Garmin 200 radio. It's twice the radio that the Lowrance is.

Then set up a NMEA 2000 network to take advantage of why you bought the Lorwance in the 1st place.

Thanx for the reply. I've been into the settings on the lowrance and the output is turned on and have tried changing the output sentences around to see if that helped but Nada

Can you tell us EXACTLY how you have this wired up? Which wires from GPS go to which wires on VHF and vice-versa?

I believe it should be:

VHF WHITE TO GPS ORANGE
VHF BROWN TO GPS GREEN

VHF YELLOW TO GPS YELLOW
VHF GREEN TO GPS BLUE

On HDS, go to Network -> NMEA0183 and make sure that "Receive Waypoint" and "Output" are checked. Go to "Serial Ports" and make sure baud rate is set to 4800 (the manual doesn't show what the options are here, so I'm guessing it will let you adjust baud rate.. if it gives you the option, make sure its set to 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity).
