Coast Guard Raises Weight Standards for Boats
Policy Changes - State, National
The weight of the 47 passengers and the pilot ranged from 110 to 268 pounds. Prior to this event the U.S. Coast Guard's standard weight for calculating the number of people that a commercial vessel is permitted to carry was 140 pounds. The average weight of the people on the Ethan Allen tour boat was 177.5 pounds--37.5 pounds more than the weight used for calculating safety standards.
State - New York State raised the state weight requirement to 174 pounds, immediately after the Ethan Allen accident. This is the number that the NTSB had recommended in the past.
National - In April 2006, the Coast Guard asked owners of 7,000 commercial vessels nationwide to voluntarily use 185 pounds in calculating the number of passengers permitted. A spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, said the higher weight standard is still under review before it would be changed into a formal policy.
